Chaucer Funchess
Associate Head Strength and Conditioning Coach
Chaucer Funchess is in his 10th year on the strength and conditioning staff at Southern Miss and fourth as the associate head coach. He assists the strength and conditioning director with training of the student athletes in all 16 sports. He assists with football and is directly responsible for men's basketball.
A native of Magee, Miss., Funchess was a three-sport letterwinner at Magee High School before attending Copiah-Lincoln Community College on a football scholarship.
After playing there for two seasons, he went on to Oklahoma State, where he was a two-year letterwinner.
Funchess served as a student assistant football coach at Oklahoma State during the 1994 season, before becoming a student assistant strength coach at OSU during the 1994-95 academic year.
After receiving his bachelor's degree in health and physical education from Langston University in 1995, Funchess went on to become a graduate assistant coach at Louisiana-Monroe during the 1995-96 school year.
He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association. Funchess is married to the former Tanya Holloway of Magee, Miss., and the couple has a son, Chance.
